Day 24

I used to not be very good about reading the Bible. I would start every single day in the word, and then I found myself making excuses. I'll do it later this afternoon. Tomorrow. I'm reading a book by a Christian author right now, so I can skip the Bible today.

This morning when I woke up, I asked myself, What would I be most satisfied in accomplishing today? And the answer was--spending some time with God. So I did it first thing. Hallelujah, I've come farther than I used to be.

Just a few minutes in the rocking chair, sipping my coffee, starting the book of Acts because, why not? Let's look back at the early church to see what examples they've left for us how to do life. I get as a far as the 8th verse when something hits me. Jesus's final words before ascending to heaven were these:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

The key word here for me is witnesses. Jesus asked His disciples to be witnesses for what they had seen. Not lawyers, arguing the case for Him and fiercely debating anyone who disagrees. Not judges, determining a punishment for those who think differently and condemning them to what we believe is the correct fate. Witnesses. We are tell what we've seen, what we know to be true in our own lives. We run into all sorts of problems as Christians when we attempt to be lawyers and judges running a moral courtroom that Godis in charge of. What if we were to take a step back, and return to the humble role of witnesses, simply testifying on behalf of Christ in our daily lives?

It's a small revelation, one that took less than 10 minutes to get. I can't help but wonder how many other things God has wanted to tell me that I wasn't able to hear, simply because I didn't make the time to read and listen EVERYDAY.

Lord, thanks for breaking through my stubbornness each morning. Help me to connect with You in Your Word everyday. Not out of guilt or obligation, but out of a sense of awe and wonderment, and excitement to see what you want to show me next. Give me fresh revelations so I can be a witness for all that You do.
